چکیده

The sympathetic skin response (SSR) is a change in skin potential following arousal stimulation, ®rst described by Tarchanoff (1890). SSR is a polysynaptic re ̄ex that is activated by a variety of afferent inputs. The ®nal efferent pathway involves preand postganglionic sympathetic sudomotor ®bers and ultimately activation of sweat glands by the sympathetic out ̄ow. The re ̄ex is coordinated in the posterior hypothalamus, upper brain-stem reticular formation and spinal cord. Thus, central or peripheral lesions of the sudomotor system can impair the SSR. The morphology of the SSR is variable and the potentials may be either mono-, bi-, or triphasic. The SSR has been advocated as simple means of assessing sympathetic sudomotor out ̄ow in central and peripheral nervous system disorders. However, the correlation of an abnormal SSR with more generalized abnormalities of sympathetic sudomotor dysfunction, autonomic dysfunction or small ®ber sensory neuropathy is often poor. Sympathetic Skin Response in patients with major depressive disorders

Introduction: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most prevalent diseases of psychiatry. There is evidence that suggests the autonomic nervous system plays a role in depression. Sympathetic Skin Response (SSR) is used to evaluate the autonomic system. Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) evaluates peripheral thick myelinated fibers. In SSR we evaluate thin unmyelinated fibers. The purpose of ...

Inclusion of Height and Limb Length when Interpreting Sympathetic Skin Response

It is more than a decade since scientists are making use of sympathetic skin response (SSR) as a clinical and research method to evaluate sympathetic nervous system. A major portion of the efferent pathway of this response is composed of non-myelinated nerves. Thus, the latency of the response may be significantly different in normal individuals with different height and limb lengths. This stud...

Aging and aerobic fitness affect the contribution of noradrenergic sympathetic nerves to the rapid cutaneous vasodilator response to local heating.

Sedentary aging results in a diminished rapid cutaneous vasodilator response to local heating. We investigated whether this diminished response was due to altered contributions of noradrenergic sympathetic nerves by assessing 1) the age-related decline and 2) the effect of aerobic fitness. Using laser-Doppler flowmetry, we measured skin blood flow (SkBF) in young (24 ± 1 yr) and older (64 ± 1 y...

Sympathetic skin response in patients with spinal cord injury.

PURPOSE To assess the effectiveness of sympathetic skin response in evaluating peripheral sympathetic nerve activity of patients with spinal cord injury, and to report on the basic properties of sympathetic skin response. METHODS Sympathetic skin response evoked by electrical stimulation was recorded from the palms and soles of healthy volunteers and patients with spinal cord injury. RESULT...
